UNCOMPROMISINGLY SUSTAINABLE: IT ALSO WORKS WITHOUT OIL AND GAS
If a world-renowned technology company is committed to sustainable mobility, then it also needs an innovative space that reflects this ideology.
APESS® has succeeded in maximizing building efficiency above and beyond the standard, thus enabling extremely resource-efficient and independent heating and cooling. Just as sustainable as the developments being researched in the building.
AVL List GmbH(www.avl.com), one of the world’s leading mobility technology companies for development, simulation and testing in the automotive industry and other sectors, has opted for an innovative and technologically advanced solution when designing the building efficiency for its new Tech Center site in Steyr.
The requirements profile involved a certain degree of complexity, as oil and gas were ruled out per se as energy suppliers, a district heating connection was not possible and at the same time there was a desire to be as independent as possible from the energy market. A real challenge, which Metaplan Energietechnik GmbH successfully met as planners with the support of APESS®. Comprehensive know-how, many calculations and ultimately the choice of innovative, individually manufactured components resulted in a high overall efficiency with a fail-safe and low-maintenance design.
“Buildings of the future” have nothing to give away.
In a “building of the future”, meticulous care is taken to ensure that every energy source is used and that no energy is lost. In the Tech Center, this means that the energy from the waste heat from the six high-performance test benches as well as the waste heat from the ventilation systems is used for heating. Highly efficient water-to-water and air-to-water heat pumps ensure a constant heating and cooling supply and everything is combined with low-temperature systems.
With APESS®, all components are precisely matched to the requirements. This means that heat exchangers, hydraulic units and heat pumps can be virtually mapped in advance and all thermodynamic processes can be calculated over an entire year. This makes it possible to specify an overall efficiency level in advance, calculate the expected operating costs and, of course, show thepotential CO2 savings in black and white.
A heat pump alone
is only sustainable to a limited extent
What sets APESS® so clearly apart from its market competitors is simply the enormous energy savings, which sometimes seem unrealistic and cause corresponding skepticism.
This topic was also on the table in Steyr. With the result that with APESS® it was actually possible to save another 40 percent of energy compared to a configuration “with heat pump only”.
This shows how incredibly useful all these coordination measures between the components are and how intelligent the higher-level networked control system is, which permanently and independently optimizes the entire hydraulic system and the control circuits of the heat pump and cooling systems based on current usage.
The many patented processes with which APESS® has helped tosavethousands of tons ofCO2over the years are also a decisive factor.
Flagship project, but no exception
The Tech Center Steyr is undoubtedly an exemplary industrial plant that shows new ways of achieving sustainable and resource-saving air conditioning. At APESS® , these high savings potentials are state of the art because the company has been dealing with these issues for several decades, an incredibly extensive knowledge database is available and, thanks to high-precision software, all procedures and processes can be mapped in figures.

Instead of conventional cooling, heating and ventilation systems, each of which works as a system in its own right, APESS® solutions combine all requirements in a complete energy system with an integrated heat pump and optimize this system as a unit.
